FAQ

What does it matter which college I attend?

Non, really. In terms of getting into the auto industry, there is no distinction between colleges. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

What should I know about car mechanics

You don't need to know anything about cars to work as an auto mechanic. You only need to know how to fix them. That's why most people start doing jobs like fitting brake pads or changing tires before progressing to more complex repairs.

It is important to be able to read and understand diagrams as well as written instructions. It is also important to know how to determine if parts are damaged or need to be replaced.

It is important that you have proper training and guidance before you attempt to repair vehicles. This is especially true if your job involves expensive parts like transmissions or engines.

Although you won't be required to know much about cars you should have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and principles of mechanical engineering. This includes understanding the mechanics of how engines and brakes work.

It is also important to remember that you will need to be able to handle many situations. For example, you may find yourself working on a vehicle that has been involved in a serious accident. Experience with accidents and breakdowns is also a must.

You must also be willing to learn quickly. You will need to be able not only to diagnose problems but also to perform simple maintenance tasks like tightening bolts and nuts.

Is being an auto mechanic a promising career choice?

There are many exciting opportunities in the automotive industry for people who are driven to achieve excellence. It is important to work hard and learn as much from others as you can in order to succeed in this industry.

Because you will be spending most of your time communicating with customers and employees, you will need excellent communication skills. It's important to be flexible and willing to travel. This will make commutes difficult.

If you're interested in pursuing a career in automotive, consider taking classes at community colleges and universities. Many schools offer programs specific to students interested in sales, auto repair, or customer service.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. You can get your bachelor's degree in as little as four years.

In addition, many companies will hire graduates straight out of school. Therefore, it is a good idea to look for employment while still pursuing part-time studies.

Once you've completed your education, you'll probably need to complete some form of training before being able to take up a position as an automotive technician.

You will need to pass the Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. This exam covers topics such as engine maintenance, brakes and suspension.

Once you've passed the ASE test, you can apply for a license issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

A license permits you to repair private vehicles. Based on the services rendered, you will receive compensation.

It is important to remember that not all states require licensing. If you intend to work in another state, however, you will need a license.

Some states don't issue licenses until after completing a certain amount of training. This could be you.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salaries are increasing so that a professional earning less than $30,000 could expect to make $40,000 in a few years.
